Goodwill Central Texas, a private 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, was founded in Austin in 1958 and has since become a multidimensional non-profit organization. In 1986, Bert Kruger Smith and Willie Kocurek founded AGE of Central Texas, formerly known as “Austin Groups for the Elderly”, with the vision of housing a consortium of organizations that would provide services to older adults under one roof. Over the past 30 years, AGE and its programs have evolved to meet the needs surrounding older adults and those who care for them. AGE of Central Texas offers the only authorized adult day care programs in Central Texas, with AGE Thrive Social & Wellness Centers located in Austin and Round Rock.
In 2003, the Central Texas Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CTCAHT) was formed after Austin law enforcement agencies worked on their first human trafficking case. The CTCAHT was created to ensure that emergency services were available at the time of the rescue and to address the lack of a collaborative response to human trafficking in Central Texas. AGE of Central Texas provides many free services to help caregivers and older adults get the most out of every stage of adult life, such as caregiver seminars, support groups, free equipment loans, support for early memory loss, and personalized advice on how to use other available resources. The AGE building now serves as an incubator for emerging and small non-profit organizations that provide a wide variety of services to young people, people with disabilities, families and people with cancer, as well as older adults. Refugee Services of Texas (RST), a non-profit organization guided by the principles of compassion and human dignity, welcomes refugees, immigrants and other displaced people and supports them to integrate and thrive in their new communities.
AGE of Central Texas collaborates with dozens of other non-profit organizations in Austin by providing referrals and information on locally available services through the Resource Information Center & by providing free mobility and safety equipment to people through other agencies that provide services to older adults. A non-profit corporation is created by filing a certificate of incorporation with the Secretary of State in accordance with the Texas Business Organizations Code (BOC). The Act addresses a limited number of important issues related to non-profit associations, such as the authority of the non-profit association to acquire, maintain and transfer property on its own behalf; the authority to sue and be sued as an independent legal entity; and the contractual and tort liability of the officers of an association and its members. Filing the statement does not represent the creation of the non-profit association; it simply provides a method for a non-profit association to receive notice of any lawsuit filed against it. AGE of Central Texas is a regional non-profit organization that provides education and support to people across the aging spectrum. AmeriCorps Central Texas (ACT) is a collaboration of ten local non-profit organizations that offers you a wide range of opportunities to create a better future for yourself and for Central Texas through paid service. Goodwill Central Texas has become deeply related to business and labor growth, the environment and the general spirit of Central Texas.
